The New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) isn’t happy with how Saturday’s supplementary election in Ghari/Tsanyawa went down. They believe it wasn’t fair, especially since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Ya’u Garba Gwarmai, won.
Gwarmai managed to beat Muhammed Yusuf Ali, the NNPP candidate, after a previous election was declared inconclusive by the court.
At a press conference, Kano’s NNPP Chairman, Hon. Hashim Dungurawa, expressed his concerns about how the election results were handled.
He feels that their candidate was shortchanged and that people were not allowed to vote freely as they wished.
Allegations of Election Manipulation
Dungurawa shared that there were reports of voters being turned away, which he finds unacceptable. He said that INEC worked with APC to ensure the results favored them.
The NNPP wants the results from Tsanyawa/Ghari to be scrapped, focusing on the ten polling units the court previously nullified.
The chairman pointed out that even though voting in the ten polling units of Ghari Local Government went smoothly, the results were still manipulated.
He accused some politicians of colluding with INEC officials to declare the APC candidate as the winner unfairly.
Instead of announcing the results at the local collation center, Dungurawa claims INEC chose to make the announcement at its State Headquarters, which he argues allowed manipulations to take place.
He also said that the prior court decision required fresh elections in those ten units, yet the old results were reinstated.
Dungurawa described these actions as unpatriotic and a disservice to the voters who were denied their rightful say in the election. He stressed how these actions tarnish the reputation of INEC, the body responsible for fair elections.
He wrapped up by stating that NNPP will keep pushing back against injustice and election manipulation. They won’t accept anyone using influence or power to override the will of the Kano State voters.
