Deputy Prime Minister Olavo Correia described the floods as “catastrophic”. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to find missing people. The heavy rain, described as rare by Ester Brito from Cape Verde’s meteorology institute, has damaged roads, homes, and vehicles. Brito noted, “It is a rare situation because what was recorded is above our 30-year climatologist average.” Unfortunately, the lack of advanced radar equipment hindered their ability to foresee the magnitude of these rains.
Interior Minister Paulo Rocha recalled the terror felt during the floods, calling it a night of “panic and despair”. In São Vicente, community organizer Alveno Yali called it “an incredible moment of heavy rains, strong winds, and flash floods, resulting in significant material losses”.
A Global Response
People from the Cape Verdean diaspora, especially in France, Luxembourg, Portugal, and the US, have jumped in to help. They have started crowdfunding campaigns to provide emergency aid. Tens of thousands of euros have been raised, helping to buy vital supplies like food, water, hygiene products, and other emergency items. Andreia Levy, the president of Hello Cabo Verde in France, emphasized how the entire diaspora is stepping up, stating that they plan to deliver the aid directly.
As Cape Verde deals with the aftermath of these floods, it’s clear that support from around the world is making a difference.
