The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, says some Nigerian hospitals have turned into death traps.
Speaking at the second edition of the Church of Nigeria Health Summit in Abuja, he said this sad reality is not due to lack of medical skill.
“It is not the absence of knowledge, but the absence of compassion and ethics,” he lamented.
He said many emergency patients needing simple life-saving intervention are abandoned or asked to pay first. This, he said, violates both the Hippocratic Oath and the law of Christ.
“The noble image of the medical profession has been marred by false diagnoses, extortionate billing, counterfeit drugs, lack of accountability, and poor patient care,” he declared.
Ndukuba urged Christian medical practitioners to rise to a higher calling, serving under “not just the Hippocratic Oath, but the Law of Christ.”
Church Plans to Step In Where Government Fails
He announced plans to create the Church of Nigeria Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and the Church of Nigeria Health Professionals Guild.
The church will also conduct a nationwide survey of Anglican-owned health facilities to better harness resources. He noted that unlike the ECWA Church, the Anglican Church is yet to make its mark in pharmaceutical production.
“We must not only complement government’s efforts but be the alternative of the best for the people,” he said.
He called for parishes, dioceses, and provinces to set up and strengthen healthcare facilities, train professionals, establish research labs, and produce pharmaceuticals.
Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Amal Pepple, warned that Nigeria has some of the worst health indices globally. She said the national health insurance scheme, though promising, has failed to achieve the needed impact.
She also raised alarm over the continuous migration of skilled health workers abroad, leaving Nigeria with a worsening manpower crisis in the health sector.
