The political atmosphere in Oyo State is heating up ahead of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election set for Saturday, 16th August 2025.
The election will fill the seat left vacant after the death of Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi in July 2024. He was serving his second term under the All Progressives Congress (APC) before his passing at the age of 51.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says voting will hold across the 12 electoral wards of the constituency. These include Bodija, Sango, Mokola, Ijokodo, Yemetu, Oke Aare, and Oke Aremo.
Others are Oke Sapati, Inanlande, University of Ibadan, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Agbowo, Beere, Oje, Agodi Gate, Ikolaba, Bashorun, Idi Ape, Samonda, Okoro, and Sabo.
Initially, 19 political parties indicated interest in the race. However, INEC released the final list with only five cleared candidates. No official explanation was given for the reduction.
INEC Names Five Candidates
The cleared candidates are Dexter Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC); Adewale Haastrup Olatunji of the APC; Olabisi Olajumoke Odususi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Fola Sunday Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); and Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
At a stakeholders’ meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Adeniran Tella, assured voters of a free and fair process.
“The success of this bye-election rests on our collective commitment to fairness, transparency, and inclusivity. Let us make this a model for future elections,” he said.
He confirmed that non-sensitive materials had arrived, and sensitive items would follow before polling day.
Parties Mobilise for Support
Campaigns are in full swing as the PDP, APC, and other parties intensify door-to-door canvassing. Governor Seyi Makinde, while flagging off the PDP campaign at Bodija International Market, declared, “This election is very important because we all need to prove a point that Oyo State is a PDP State.”
Makinde urged residents to back PDP’s candidate, noting his past service in the State House of Assembly and as Deputy Chief of Staff. “He didn’t disappoint you. Based on what he has been able to do as my DCoS, we know he would deliver if he goes to Abuja to represent us,” the governor said.
APC’s State Chairman, Pharmacist Olayide Abas, made a similar call for support, pointing to APC’s record in the constituency.
“Our departed hero, Prince Olaide Akinremi, raised the bar of quality lawmaking. We have another passionate man who will surpass his records — Adewale Olatunji is ready to deliver the goods,” Abas told supporters.
