The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says more groups are pushing to become registered political parties in Nigeria.
Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information & Voter Education Committee, gave the update after the Commission’s weekly meeting on Thursday.
Since the last update on July 23, 2025, the Commission has received eight fresh letters of intent from associations. “This brings the number received so far to 151,” Olumekun said.
He explained that information on the latest requests — including proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leaders — is now on INEC’s website for public access.
INEC has created a special portal for party registration. The Commission has started shortlisting associations that meet the requirements to move to the application stage.
Olumekun said more updates will come after the 16 bye-elections in 12 states on Saturday, August 16, 2025. “Details will be released immediately after the bye-elections,” he assured.
He also repeated INEC’s pledge to Nigerians: “Once again, we reassure Nigerians that the Commission shall continue to keep citizens informed on all its activities.”
