Telecommunications operators in Nigeria are sounding the alarm over significant disruptions in diesel supply that could paralyze services nationwide.
Under the banner of the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), they expressed despair as diesel delivery to cell sites comes to a halt.
According to Gbenga Adebayo, ALTON’s Chairman, the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) have allegedly blocked access to diesel depots in key locations such as Kaduna, Lagos, and Koko.
This roadblock stems from claims by IHS Towers accusing two NOGASA members of diesel misappropriation.
“The action poses a grave threat to the operation of some 16,000 telecommunications sites nationwide,” ALTON warned.
These crucial sites power mobile networks and internet services for millions, impacting everything from banking to healthcare and national security.
ALTON stresses that while they typically avoid intervening in member disputes, the potential ripple effects on public safety and national infrastructure are dire.
The association has a message for NOGASA and NUPENG: Respect the critical role you play in Nigeria’s energy supply. ALTON urges, “Ensure your actions do not jeopardize national infrastructure or public welfare.”
They press for immediate access to diesel supplies and encourage all involved to pursue resolution through dialogue, emphasizing that telecommunications infrastructure is deemed Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) by law.
Ensuring Uninterrupted Connectivity
Any blockade threatening telecommunications infrastructure is not just disruptive but a hazard to national security, ALTON said. They admonish, “Calling for dialogue and legal processes instead of actions that endanger the entire industry is crucial.”
