Tinubu Approves Promotion of 30 Senior Correctional Officers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the promotion of 30 senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to the rank of Assistant Controllers General of Corrections (ACG).

This move, the presidency said, aligns with the drive for “merit-based advancement, professional excellence, and strong leadership across the service.”

The newly promoted include 27 general duty officers who have led correctional formations nationwide with grit and discipline.

Three professional officers were also recognised. These specialists in nursing, medical lab science, and public health received elevation for their exceptional service and impact in the healthcare arm of the service.

Reform Agenda Gains Momentum at NCoS

The promotion is part of the ongoing internal reforms of the NCoS under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu and the direct supervision of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo has repeatedly said that professionalism must define all aspects of security and public safety institutions, and the NCoS is no exception.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, described the promotion as a significant morale boost for the entire service.

“This promotion is a reward for past dedication, but more importantly, it’s a call to higher responsibility,” Nwakuche said.

He added: “We are committed to reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates, and this elevation must reflect in greater dedication to those goals.”

A Correctional System Ready for the Future

The CGC stressed the importance of global best practices, professionalism, and a strong moral code in correctional management.

He charged the new ACGs to serve as role models and strategic leaders capable of meeting the complex demands of modern corrections.

“We must build a disciplined and motivated workforce,” he said, “fit for today’s realities in public safety and justice delivery.”
