Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, has officially cut ties with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing the party’s growing weakness and failure to provide meaningful governance for Nigerians.
In a letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA, Kogi State, Melaye declared his immediate resignation from all levels of the party.
He shared the letter with the public through his official X account on Thursday.
Melaye said the PDP had failed to rescue Nigerians from the “prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
He wrote: “I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party at all levels of involvement.”
Melaye, who was the party’s governorship candidate in the November 2023 Kogi election, accused the PDP of losing its vision and capacity to provide alternative leadership for the country.
“This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people,” he said.
“Having carefully reflected on the state of the party, I can no longer in good conscience participate in the activities of the party or lend my support to her agenda.”
Resignation Marks Total Withdrawal from PDP Structures
In the letter, Melaye asked that his resignation be seen as a complete detachment from the PDP at all levels. He left no room for ambiguity about the finality of his exit.
“In view of the above, please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect,” he stated.
Though he didn’t name his next political move, many wonder whether he will join another party or take a break from politics. The former lawmaker is known for his vocal criticism of the ruling APC, flamboyant lifestyle, and strong social media presence.
Despite his harsh verdict on the PDP’s leadership, Melaye ended the letter with a brief note of appreciation for the party, which gave him the opportunity of being a federal lawmaker for four terms.
“Thank you for the opportunity to serve under the platform during my period of membership.”
As 2027 draws closer, observers say more realignments like this may take shape within Nigeria’s troubled political parties.
