The Labour Party has declared its 2027 presidential ticket open to all aspirants, warning that no candidate—including Peter Obi—has automatic rights to it.
Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the factional national secretary, made this known during an interview with Trust TV. He cautioned Obi over his growing ties with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), saying such moves could cost him the party’s endorsement.
“Datti is qualified to contest for the presidency as good as Peter Obi. So, the seat of that candidacy is not reserved for anybody. It is open for a competitive contest,” Ibrahim said.
Ibrahim confirmed that Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, would be allowed to contest if he chooses to run.
“If Datti is willing to aspire for presidency and he wants to do that under the Labour Party, we will open it. Come and buy the form, mobilise his support and then get elected,” he said.
He warned that divided loyalty could lead to disqualification. “There’s no way you’ll continue to romance with other political party and then you still come back and your one leg is in the Labour Party. No, ab initio, you may be disqualified,” Ibrahim added.
Baba-Ahmed recently declared interest in the 2027 race, but only if Obi decides not to run. He reaffirmed his loyalty, saying: “I religiously supported Peter Obi and I would do so again in 2027.”
He also stressed that he is not driven by ambition, but by a desire to “stop the killings, stop the stealing, stop the slide.”
Obi’s ADC Alliance Raises Eyebrows
Obi’s involvement with the ADC-led coalition has stirred internal concerns. Though he insists he remains a member of the Labour Party, ADC leaders have urged full commitment from all members.
Meanwhile, ADC’s constitution reportedly bars dual party membership, which could block Obi’s presidential bid under their platform unless he formally exits LP.
