Reality TV personality and health entrepreneur, Uriel Oputa, is stirring strong reactions online following her blunt take on why many beautiful, intelligent Nigerian women remain unmarried.
Speaking on the NIX Outside The Box podcast, Uriel shared her views without flinching, directly confronting what she sees as a harmful mindset among many Nigerian men.
“You see some women in Nigeria now, from 35 to 40 and even older, and they’re still single,” she said. “I’m talking about beautiful, intelligent women. Why? It’s because it’s hard to find a decent man in Nigeria these days.”
She pointed to what she called a deep-rooted mentality that drives many men to keep searching for something “better,” even when they’ve found someone special.
“It all boils down to this culture we have — this idea that there’s always something better out there. But the truth is, there’s nothing better,” she said.
While she sounded critical, she appeared to suggest she still admires Nigerian men.
“I adore Nigerian men — honestly, I do. There’s no one like them anywhere in the world,” she added. “But when I hear a man say he can’t be sexually committed to one woman, I can’t keep quiet.”
“Try Dating for Depth, Not Just Physique”
Uriel went on to explore the root of many relationship failures in Nigeria. According to her, many men are chasing looks, not substance — and it’s costing them real connection.
“A lot of men in Nigeria don’t date for substance. They date for what they see — hips, waist, face — all the packaging,” she said. “Then later, they’re either bored or tempted by the next ‘better package’ because they didn’t choose what really matters: the mind, the values, the depth.”
In her view, commitment becomes difficult when attraction is based only on physical appearance. She challenged men to rethink what they value in women and to try choosing differently.
“If I could sit with any of these men today, I’d tell them straight: try a different kind of woman. Try dating for depth, not just physique. You might just find the commitment you claim you can’t handle.”
“Check Your Choices, Not Your Nature”
Uriel also challenged the popular excuse many men give — that they are simply not “wired” for monogamy. For her, it’s not about nature but the patterns of choice and intention.
“Sometimes we need to stop blaming our nature and start checking our choices,” she said firmly.
Expectedly, her one-sided view received applause from women readers online, and conversely triggered defensive responses from some men who believe she’s unfairly generalising.
