French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, have filed a defamation lawsuit against American media personality Candace Owens.
The suit accuses Owens of waging “a campaign of global humiliation” by repeatedly alleging that France’s First Lady is a man.
According to the court filing, Owens made the claims in a series of viral videos starting in March 2025, with titles like “Is France’s First Lady a Man?” She later followed up with a branded eight-part podcast called Becoming Brigitte.
The Macrons say they sent Owens multiple retraction demands backed by documents, public records, and direct outreach. She allegedly responded with mockery.
The couple are suing Owens for punitive damages, citing 22 counts of defamation.
Merchandise, Mockery, and Mounting Lies
The lawsuit also claims Owens profited from the scandal by selling merchandise based on her allegations.
According to the complaint, she told her followers in 2024: “I will stake my entire professional reputation on the fact that Brigitte Macron is in fact a man.”
Rather than retracting, Owens doubled down. The suit lists even more bizarre claims she allegedly made.
These include accusations that Brigitte “stole another person’s identity,” that the couple are “blood relatives committing incest,” and that Emmanuel Macron was “chosen by the CIA as part of a mind-control program.”
In a public statement attached to the suit, the Macrons said: “Ms Owens’ campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety.”
They added: “We gave her every opportunity to back away from these claims, but she refused.”
Taking the Fight to Court in the U.S.
The Macrons, represented by top U.S. defamation law firm Clare Locke, say they’re ready to appear in court in Delaware.
Clare Locke famously won the Dominion Voting Systems case against Fox News in 2023.
According to their press release, Owens turned each attempt at clarification into new fuel for “frenzied” online content, leading to “relentless bullying on a worldwide scale.”
The Macrons said: “Every time we leave our home, we do so knowing that countless people have heard, and many believe, these vile fabrications. It is invasive, dehumanizing, and deeply unjust.”
The lawsuit says the scandal has cost them business opportunities, peace of mind, and a fortune in legal fees.
They now hope that the court will help “set the record straight and end this campaign of defamation once and for all.”
This is not the first time Brigitte has been in the news in controversial circumstances. Just in May, the world caught Macron on camera being pushed in the face, likely by his wife, just before the presidential couple alighted from their aircraft during a state visit to Vietnam.
Other personalities have endured similar conspiracy theories, such as those made about former American First Lady, Michelle Obama.
