President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received a strong endorsement for a second term from the Emir of Daura, Katsina State, Alhaji Umar Faruq-Umar.
The emir cited Tinubu’s rare show of respect towards his predecessor, the late President Muhammadu Buhari, as the reason for his public declaration.
At 97, the traditional ruler rose from his seat, placed his hand on his chest, and called Tinubu’s name with emotion during the condolence visit from the Nigerian Governors’ Wives Forum.
“I am thankful to President Bola Tinubu, a good person I have been with in the last 30 years,” the emir said in his palace on Saturday.
“I have never seen a befitting state burial and honour done by a president like what Tinubu has done to Muhammadu Buhari.”
‘We Are Going for Tinubu in 2027’
Tinubu’s presence in Daura during Buhari’s burial and the dignified arrangements struck a deep chord with the emir and his people.
The president declared a national public holiday, stayed in Daura for days, and authorised the use of a presidential jet to bring Buhari’s remains home.
He also sent top government figures, including First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and Vice President Shettima’s wife, to the emirate.
“This respect and honour shown to us by the president will not be forgotten; we are going to reciprocate it,” the emir vowed.
“This is why in 2027 we are going for Tinubu.”
The governor of Katsina State, Dikko Radda, welcomed the delegation and guided them to the palace. The event came just weeks after Buhari’s passing sent shockwaves across the country.
‘This Loss Is Deeply Personal’ — Oluremi Tinubu
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who led the governors’ wives, said their visit was not political but deeply personal.
“We are not here today merely out of duty. We are here because this loss is deeply personal,” she said.
She described the late president as a man of deep integrity whose legacy went far beyond Daura.
“My husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has lost not just a former Head of State, but a trusted ally and friend of over 30 years,” she added.
She offered prayers for Buhari’s soul, asking that “Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings and grants him eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus.”
Many Nigerians have shared mixed reactions online. Some see the emir’s endorsement as natural respect. Others question if state honours alone justify re-election.
