The National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP), FCT Abuja chapter, has suspended its three-month strike following intervention by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The doctors had embarked on the strike over non-payment of salaries and allowances, and the abrupt dismissal of 127 healthcare workers by the Area Council Service Commission.
The strike, which began in April, crippled public healthcare services across the six area councils in the FCT, affecting thousands of patients daily.
Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, met with union representatives and key stakeholders in early July to resolve the impasse.
In a statement, NAGGMDP Chairman, Dr. Okoreaffia Ogbonnaya, confirmed that the minister had approved the initial payment of arrears and shown commitment to resolving the remaining issues.
“We acknowledge the minister’s sincere efforts and believe this marks a new phase for healthcare delivery in the FCT,” Dr. Ogbonnaya added.
Members have now been directed to resume duties immediately. Engagements are ongoing to secure the full reinstatement of affected workers and ensure payment of all outstanding entitlements.
The union also requested improved working conditions, staffing, and infrastructure support to prevent future disruptions.
