Technology: OpenAI Launches $50 Million Fund to Support AI Startups and Nonprofits
Leading AI research company OpenAI has announced a new $50 million fund aimed at supporting nonprofit and community-based organisations developing AI-powered solutions in education, healthcare, and social impact.
The fund was launched on July 18, as part of OpenAI’s growing commitment to ensure that artificial intelligence serves the public good, not just commercial interests.
According to OpenAI, the initiative will support grassroots innovation, nonprofit startups, and community-led projects, particularly in underrepresented areas.
The fund will also help organisations access technical support, training, and funding, empowering them to build tools that address real-world problems.
OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, described the move as a step toward creating “meaningful and inclusive AI systems that benefit society.”
This marks OpenAI’s first major announcement following plans to restructure its operations under a public benefit corporation model, keeping its nonprofit mission at the centre of its corporate strategy.
