England’s women’s team have booked their spot in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 semi-final after defeating Sweden 3–2 in a tense penalty shootout. The dramatic match ended 2–2 after extra time.
It all unfolded Thursday night in Basel, Switzerland. Sweden came out swinging. Kosovare Asllani scored in the 2nd minute. Stina Blackstenius added a second goal in the 25th.
But England refused to quit. Lucy Bronze fired back with a goal in the 79th minute. Just two minutes later, Michelle Agyemang slammed in the equaliser. Chloe Kelly assisted both goals after coming off the bench.
Extra time came and went without any goals. The shootout, however, delivered drama. Nine penalties were missed in total. England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton played on with a bleeding nose. She made two game-saving stops. Smilla Holmberg missed Sweden’s final kick.
“It was one of the hardest games I’ve ever watched. Very emotional. We could’ve been out four or five times,” said England coach Sarina Wiegman.
“I couldn’t breathe at some point,” added Lucy Bronze. She praised the team’s mental fight and the crowd’s energy.
England have now made history as the first team in Women’s Euro knockout rounds to overturn a two-goal deficit.
They will face Italy on Tuesday, July 22, in Geneva. The Lionesses are aiming to defend their 2022 championship crown.
