Mamman Daura, nephew and close confidant of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has revealed touching details of his uncle’s final hours.
He said Buhari was cheerful and full of hope just the night before he passed away.
Daura, who spoke with ThisDay newspaper, described their last conversation inside the London Clinic where Buhari had been receiving treatment for a yet-to-be-disclosed illness.
“We were together on Saturday, talking and laughing,” Daura said.
“Buhari was in high spirits in the London Clinic where he was admitted.”
According to him, Buhari was already making plans to return to Nigeria within the week.
“He even had the plan to depart for Nigeria upon his discharge this week,” Daura shared.
“He made sure arrangements were made to sort out the hotel bills of everybody who was in London on his behalf before departing.”
Daura left the clinic at about 9 p.m. that Saturday, promising to visit again the next day.
A sudden turn in the morning
But Sunday did not go as planned.
“He was looking forward to his doctor’s visit on Sunday morning,” Daura said.
By noon, Buhari began struggling to breathe. Doctors rushed to intervene.
But by 4:30 p.m., the 82-year-old former Head of State passed on, leaving Nigeria and his family in mourning.
“I left him around 9pm on Saturday in high spirits and promised to see him on Sunday afternoon,” Daura said. “But around midday, he started having breathing challenges.”
Despite the efforts of medical staff, “he gave up the ghost” just hours after.
Mr Daura himself is reportedly ill and receiving treatment at a hospital in London.
While Buhari served as president, Daura was widely regarded as a key figure within the so-called ‘Buhari cabal’, a group many, including former First Lady Aisha Buhari, believed held significant sway over the government of Buhari.
