The opposition coalition has issued a strong warning to Peter Obi, urging him not to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
They said if he does, it “could mark the end of his political trajectory.”
The warning follows Monday’s remarks by the Director-General of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, who said that Peter Obi “will contest the 2027 presidential election, with or without the ADC coalition ticket.”
Tanko also advised that the party should zone its presidential ticket to the South instead of the North.
But not everyone agreed.
‘Don’t Walk Away, Build Something That Will Last’
In a quick reaction, Comrade Abayomi Bello of the ADC Youth Vanguard fired back. He warned that if Tanko’s statement truly reflects Obi’s intentions, then Obi may be walking into political ruin.
“If this truly represents his thinking,” Bello said, “the move could mark the end of his political trajectory.”
He accused Obi of risking his entire credibility by appearing like another desperate politician fixated on his personal ambition rather than building a nation.
Bello said the former Anambra State governor, who has moved from APGA to PDP to Labour and now ADC, needs to pause and think about what kind of legacy he wants to leave behind.
“Nigerians may begin to see Mr. Obi not as a visionary reformer,” he wrote, “but as yet another self-interested politician.”
According to Bello, real coalitions are not built overnight. They require “patience, negotiation, and compromise.” If Obi leaves now, he risks losing key supporters and frustrating the same young Nigerians who rallied behind him in 2023.
Obi Advised to Mentor Youth, Not Abandon Ship
Instead of walking away because of a ticket loss, Bello believes Obi should use this moment to lead from within.
“He has an opportunity to mentor new leaders, influence policy direction, and build long-term political structures,” he said. “That is how legacies are built.”
“Anything else could spell political isolation,” he added.
So far, there has been no direct statement from Peter Obi to confirm or deny Tanko’s remarks. But the warning from ADC Youth Vanguard shows that tensions are rising.
For many supporters, the big question now is: will Obi stay the course, or will he walk away—again?
