The Nigerian government has deployed 25 serving ministers to Katsina for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday at age 82.
The late president will be laid to rest in Daura on Tuesday, according to Islamic rites. His remains are expected to arrive in Katsina by noon.
A short military reception will take place at the airport, after which his body will be moved to Daura for Jana’iza prayers and interment at his residence.
Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, confirmed that Vice President Kashim Shettima has travelled to London to oversee the return of Buhari’s remains.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will personally receive the remains of the former president in Katsina,” Idris said in a statement.
Buhari ruled Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 as a civilian president and briefly between 1984 and 1985 as a military head of state.
He had been seriously ill for weeks and died while receiving care at a London hospital.
Three-Day Burial Events and Mourning Period
Idris also announced that the 25-member delegation will remain in Daura until Wednesday for the third-day prayer, part of Muslim funeral traditions.
The inter-ministerial committee handling the funeral is led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume. It includes the National Security Adviser, Inspector General of Police, and other high-ranking officials.
“As we get ready to say goodbye to one of Nigeria’s prominent statesmen, the Federal Government encourages all Nigerians to join in prayers and reflection,” Idris added.
President Tinubu has moved the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting to Friday, July 18.
He also declared Tuesday, July 15 a public holiday and approved seven days of National Mourning, during which national flags will fly at half-mast.
“Condolence Registers will be available in all Federal Ministries and other locations,” the statement said.
Global leaders, including those from the African Union, ECOWAS, and foreign missions, have continued to pay tribute, recognising Buhari’s legacy in leadership and regional diplomacy.
