The Nigerian U-19 women’s basketball team, the Junior D’Tigress, suffered a 61–79 defeat to Portugal in their final group stage game at the 2025 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Brno, Czech Republic.
The match, played on July 15, saw Nigeria finish third in Group B with one win and two losses—behind Portugal and Canada—and advance to the Round of 16.
Despite a historic 93–88 opening-day victory over China, their first ever at the tournament, Nigeria’s campaign was marred by a heavy 113–42 loss to Canada, followed by the 18-point defeat to Portugal.
In the final group game, Idubamo Beggi led the scoring for Nigeria with 17 points and 6 assists, while Tobenna Nweke added 16 points. Nora Ezike contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds, and Abigail Isaac secured 7 boards.
Portugal dominated in rebounding and perimeter shooting, pulling away in the second half to seal the win.
With their group stage performance, Nigeria heads into the knockout phase and avoids an early matchup with the defending champions, the United States. The Junior D’Tigress are making their debut at the tournament after qualifying as runners-up at the 2024 FIBA U-18 Women’s African Championship.
The 2025 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup features 16 teams from across the globe and continues in Brno, Czech Republic.
