Mbah Visit Otti, Both Demand Additional State in South East

Governors Alex Otti of Abia and Peter Mbah of Enugu have again called for the creation of an additional state in the South East.

They made this call during Mbah’s official state visit to Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia State.

Otti said the demand is long overdue, as South East is the only geopolitical zone with fewer than six states.

“Virtually every geopolitical zone has six, with the North West having seven states. The South East has five states. So, I’m also in alignment with the creation of one additional state in the South East,” he said.

Regional Cooperation and Security Talks

Both leaders spoke about security and how they plan to work together to protect their people.

“You know, we share boundaries. So, some of the things we discussed are how to ensure there is security,” Otti explained.

“If he successfully drives away criminals from there, they will probably end up here. If we don’t do anything, then, one part of the South East will be secured and the other part will not be.”

The governors pledged to collaborate on intelligence sharing, security patrols, and policy alignment for the benefit of both states.

Otti again lent his voice to the creation of state police, insisting it’s necessary to localise security management.

“I’m completely in sync with my brother’s position. Our two states and many other states have supported the creation of state police. I believe the Federal Government will do something about that very soon,” he said.

A Vision of Shared Growth and Unity

Peter Mbah said the visit was meant to align both states’ policies for faster development and to “compare notes.”

“Our focus is largely on governance. We believe that the people are the epicentre of governance. So, what we do—the projects and programmes we execute—are all about the people,” Mbah said.

He praised Otti for the work he’s doing across sectors in Abia, saying their common private-sector background has shaped their “results-driven approach to governance.”

Mbah later issued a statement describing the meeting as “about partnership, shared purpose, and a collective vision for a more secure, just, and prosperous South East.”
