Air Peace has confirmed that one of its flights, P47190, veered slightly off the runway on landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State
The incident occurred on the morning of Sunday, July 13, after the aircraft took off from the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
Although the plane experienced a runway excursion, there were no injuries or damage recorded.
Air Peace spokesperson, Mr Osifo-Whiskey Efe, issued a brief statement assuring the public that safety procedures were followed.
“The aircraft veered slightly off the runway without any damage,” Efe said. “All passengers disembarked safely and calmly without any injury.”
He further added, “We reassure the flying public of our unflinching commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety in all our operations.”
The airline did not provide further technical details but promised a full report after investigations.
Runway Excursions Becoming Too Frequent?
This is not the first time a Nigerian aircraft has experienced a runway excursion in recent times.
In December 2024, a Boeing 737-400 operated by Allied Air also veered off the runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
That cargo aircraft, flying in from Lagos, swerved off Runway 22 and came to a stop on the grass verge. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in that incident either.
Nonetheless, Sunday’s incident comes as a surprise, which involves Air Peace, reputedly Nigeria’s largest and safest airline to date. None of its fleet has been involved in an air mishap in its 11 years of domestic and international service.
