A number of Governor Monday Okpebholo‘s backers in Edo State are feeling forsaken. These supporters assembled at Benin City Airport last Friday morning to rejoice over the Supreme Court ruling that upheld Okpebholo’s election.
Their group comprised market vendors and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). By 7 am, they had surged into the airport, eager to give the governor a splendid welcome.
The governor’s aircraft touched down around 12:40 pm, and the supporters were thrilled to greet him. As he proceeded toward Government House, they opted to stage a roadshow. Everyone, including motorists and bystanders, couldn’t overlook their fervor.
Stopped at Government House Entrance
However, the celebration at Government House soured when they were halted at the entrance. According to one supporter who spoke off the record, they were informed that the governor had directed that only VIPs should be allowed entry for refreshments.
“We were taken aback upon reaching the gate and were informed by security personnel that only Very Important Personalities (VIPs) would be admitted into the Government House for refreshments,” said one supporter.
Mrs. Ebosele Omogiate, another backer, expressed her dissatisfaction, noting that compared to the election season, the governor now appears more detached.
“Even in the worst times of ex-governor Godwin Obaseki, supporters and party members were not treated so poorly.”
“I departed my house before 7 am for the airport and stood in the sun for hours awaiting the governor’s arrival,” asserted another supporter.
This dilemma has left many feeling overlooked by the governor.
At the time this article was prepared, neither the government nor the ruling party in Edo had responded to the situation.
