Enugu State has officially taken flight with the launch of Enugu Air, a new airline created to deepen regional travel, create jobs, and unlock opportunities in tourism and business.
The airline was unveiled on Monday in a ceremony attended by federal aviation officials, including Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
Keyamo praised Governor Peter Mbah’s leadership, describing him as one of the “best-performing governors” in the country, despite being a member of the opposition.
“Dr Peter Mbah, you’re in PDP, but we’re scared of you,” he said in a light-hearted remark. “The way you’re going, we don’t know what will happen… you have a progressive spirit, and you’ve done well for Enugu State.”
He also urged the governor to insulate the airline from bureaucratic pitfalls and political interference.
“Do not let Enugu Air go the way of Nigerian Airways. Run it professionally. Be prompt in your departure and arrival,” he advised.
Connecting Cities, Driving Local Development
Enugu Air kicks off operations with three Embraer jets—models E170 and E190—known for their cost efficiency, cabin comfort, and strong performance on short-haul routes.
The airline’s initial network forms a strategic triangle linking Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos—three of Nigeria’s busiest cities. Expansion is already being planned to include Port Harcourt, Benin, Kano, Owerri, and beyond.
Aviation analysts say the airline could reshape the local travel economy, providing faster access to the Southeast and enhancing Enugu’s role as a logistics and business hub.
Currently, the Enugu route is dominated by Air Peace, Nigeria’s largest airline. With the arrival of Enugu Air, travellers are expected to benefit from more competition, improved service, and potentially lower ticket prices.
Inspired by Ibom Air, Focused on Professionalism
Enugu Air becomes the second state-owned airline in Nigeria after Ibom Air, launched by the Akwa Ibom State Government in 2019.
Ibom Air has built a reputation for punctuality and customer satisfaction, setting the standard for state-led aviation ventures.
Enugu authorities say they are adopting a similar business-first model, ensuring professional management, independent operations, and strong safety compliance.
Governor Mbah described the project as part of his bold strategy to “reposition Enugu as a modern economy anchored on innovation, infrastructure, and private sector partnerships.”
The move has drawn widespread interest across Nigeria’s aviation industry, with many watching closely to see if Enugu Air can replicate or exceed the early success of its Akwa Ibom counterpart.
