Nigeria’s politics experienced a tremor on Tuesday night as two former ministers under President Buhari’s government — Chibuike Amaechi and Abubakar Malami — formally exited the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Both men cited the dire state of the nation as their reason for walking away.
Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation and ex-governor of Rivers State, did not mince words.
Speaking at a coalition gathering in Abuja, he declared, “Nigeria is completely destroyed. People can’t eat. People can’t buy food. There’s no money. Everything is gone.”
Amaechi Rejects Tinubu, Calls for Citizens’ Movement
Amaechi said he resigned from the APC on July 1, revealing he had warned the party not to invite him to meetings.
“I was surprised that I wasn’t even expelled because I warned them in writing: don’t even invite me,” he said.
He accused APC and INEC of colluding to hijack future elections and called for a radical political shift.
“What must happen here is that we must start not just a party, but a movement. Nigerians must take over government, not us,” he declared.
He blasted the Tinubu-led administration, saying, “I have never believed that Tinubu is a material to govern the country. People now want Buhari back.”
Amaechi dismissed the exchange rate argument as policy, stating, “Any government that does not take into consideration the people you are governing is not a policy.”
Malami Joins ADC, Says Nigeria Is Bleeding
Shortly after, former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, also walked away from APC and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
His resignation was announced in a passionate public letter.
“This is not a decision made out of anger or ambition, but one inspired by love for our nation,” Malami said.
He decried the collapse of public safety and national governance.
“Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes… Governance has been abandoned,” he wrote.
Malami said economic conditions have become unbearable, lamenting that food prices have tripled and hope is fading.
“The poor can no longer feed their families. Young people are hopeless,” he said.
Calls for Change and National Renewal
Malami described the APC-led government as directionless and accused it of prioritising politics over the people’s welfare.
“Appointments, projects, and policies are now guided by political loyalty, not national interest,” he said.
He vowed to use the ADC platform to fight for justice, fairness, and national renewal.
“Let us rise above fear and reclaim our nation. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” he urged.
To Kebbi State residents, he promised, “I remain your son and servant. I will never abandon you.”
Both men’s departure, though long anticipated by some, sends a clear signal — political discontent within APC’s ranks is boiling over as 2027 draws ever closer.
