Supreme Court Reserves Ruling in Edo Gov Election Appeal

The Supreme Court has reserved its final judgment on the legal battle over the Edo State governorship election.

At the hearing, the court listened to arguments from both sides before adjourning the matter sine die—without setting a specific date for its ruling.

Justice Garba Lawal, who led the five-member panel, told the parties that the judgment date “will be communicated accordingly.”

The appeal was filed by Asue Ighodalo, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who claims he won the majority of lawful votes.

His counsel, Ken Mosia, SAN, urged the court to set aside the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo.

He asked the court to “declare Ighodalo as the validly elected governor of Edo State.”

Ighodalo insisted that irregularities marred the election and that the declared results do not reflect the will of the people.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Kanu Agabi, SAN, opposed the appeal.

Agabi said the petition was “inconsistent, contradictory, and legally defective.”

He accused Ighodalo and the PDP of calling the entire election illegal and then asking to benefit from it.

“They cannot seek to win from an election they themselves described as unlawful,” Agabi said.

He argued that their case lacked merit and should be thrown out in full.
