Nenadi Usman-Led Labour Party Faction Dismiss Earlier Ultimatum to Peter Obi over Coalition

The Labour Party under the Interim Caretaker Committee led by Mrs Nenadi-Usman has dismissed the 48-hour ultimatum to Peter Obi, its 2023 presidential flagbearer, over his recent involvement in coalition activities.

In a statement released by Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Senior Special Assistant to Senator Nenadi Usman, the party labelled the reports as “misleading commentaries” pushed by “political jesters.”

The clarification follows growing speculation after Obi’s participation in the unveiling of a new opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja.

The Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee said it remains firmly in support of Obi’s efforts to form a unified front capable of challenging the ruling APC.

“We wish to reaffirm that Mr. Peter Obi’s participation in the coalition activities, including the ADC unveiling, was done with the full knowledge, approval, and support of the Labour Party leadership,” the statement read.

‘Obi Has Our Support’ — Labour Party Insists

The statement also addressed rumours that the party had turned against its former presidential candidate.

“The individuals claiming to have issued an ultimatum to Mr. Obi are political jesters with no legitimate standing in the Labour Party,” it said.

The leadership stated these figures were “neither recognised by the party nor by the law, having long been sacked by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”

It added that they had also been suspended for “serial acts of indiscipline and anti-party activities.”

The statement further clarified that since May 26, 2025, the Labour Party had “publicly declared its full support for Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts aimed at creating a robust political alternative.”

‘Ignore the Discredited Elements’ — Party Urges Public

The party accused the unnamed actors of spreading confusion and falsehoods to sabotage Obi’s political movement.

“It is the remnants of the disorder and mess left behind by these impostors that the current leadership under Senator Nenadi Usman continues to clean,” it added.

It then urged the public and the media to ignore the claims made by these suspended individuals.

“For clarity, the only legitimate and authoritative source of information regarding the official position of the Labour Party on any matter remains the office of Senator Nenadi Usman, Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party,” it concluded.
