Nigeria’s political space has reshaped as opposition leaders rally around the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Former Senate President David Mark has been named interim National Chairman, while ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola becomes interim National Secretary.
At a gathering held at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, Chief Ralph Nwosu, ADC’s former national chairman, formally handed over the party’s leadership. He also presented ADC membership cards to Mark and Aregbesola before a crowd of opposition heavyweights.
Present at the event were Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi, among other prominent figures from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The politicians seemed united against all odds thrown at them to unseat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and incumbent President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Aregbesola and Mark: A New Era for ADC
Aregbesola accepted his appointment with a passionate statement on X, formerly Twitter.
“It is with deep humility, a profound sense of duty, and unwavering hope for our people… that I accept the appointment as the National Secretary of our great party,” he wrote.
He thanked ADC leaders and members for their trust and declared that “a political party, in its truest form, is a living institution built on values.”
Drawing inspiration from the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa, Aregbesola described a true political party as “a platform for the expression of aspirations”—not a “vehicle to power for the few.”
Similarly, David Mark resigned from the PDP with a letter dated June 27, citing the party’s internal collapse.
“Recent events marked by deepening divisions, persistent leadership crisis, and irreconcilable differences have reduced the party to a shadow of its former self,” he wrote.
He added: “I pledged to remain the last man standing… I have worked steadfastly to rebuild, reconcile, and reposition the party.” His departure now completes a bold transition to the opposition coalition.
Opposition Coalition Maps Out Strategy for 2027
The adoption of ADC as a platform is seen as a strategic consolidation of forces determined to challenge the ruling APC. Social media posts from leaders like Dele Momodu, Kola Ologbondiyan, and El-Rufai confirmed the decision.
“The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been adopted as the political party for the coalition,” wrote Ologbondiyan. “Sen. David Mark is interim National Chairman. Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is interim National Secretary.”
A joint communiqué released after the Abuja meeting urged Nigerians to join the coalition. It stressed national unity, economic recovery, internal security, and anti-corruption as core goals.
Coalition leaders also called for grassroots mobilisation and stronger local alliances, pledging to reflect the political realities of every region.
As the PDP goes into tatters, and ADC morphs into the main opposition party, the question now is, will the new party offer Nigerians a compelling alternative built on justice, transparency, and people-first governance, or will it be just another sect of the same elite gangsters who have betrayed the noble hopes of several Nigerian generations?
