For Bob Chikwem Amadi, a Nigerian medical student in Saint Lucia, a normal workday became something extraordinary when he met President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.
Amadi, who hails from Rivers State, has lived in Saint Lucia for ten years. He’s currently enrolled at the American International University, Saint Lucia, and has completed the four-year basic phase of his medical programme.
The chance meeting happened during President Tinubu’s courtesy visit to Prime Minister Pierre’s official residence. Amadi, who works part-time with a local catering and entertainment firm, was part of the service team at the event.
Prime Minister Pierre, upon learning there was a Nigerian student in the team, made the introduction.
“This is an inspiring moment for me,” Amadi said afterward. “Saint Lucia is an amazing island. I will describe it as a wonderful place.”
A Personal Exchange of Encouragement
President Tinubu spoke briefly with Amadi, asking about his studies and background. He offered him words of encouragement and praised his determination to succeed abroad.
The President’s gesture made an impact. “They are a very contented society and things are relatively calm,” Amadi added, reflecting on his experience living in Saint Lucia.
Amadi later joined both leaders for a symbolic group photograph. The moment, though brief, marked a connection between a young Nigerian student and two powerful heads of government.
He also spoke of the ties between both nations. “We have always hoped that there are many opportunities between Saint Lucia and Nigeria. We share similar food crops and culture, and the connection is deep,” he said.
President Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia is part of a larger diplomatic effort to deepen relations between Nigeria and the Caribbean. His schedule includes bilateral talks focused on trade, culture, and diplomatic cooperation.
