President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, on his election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.
Adeniyi was elected on Saturday, June 28, in Brussels, where the WCO is headquartered.
He becomes the first Nigerian to lead the 73-year-old body, which consists of 186 member nations.
President Tinubu described Adeniyi’s appointment as a moment of pride for Nigeria.
“I congratulate the Customs boss for bringing pride and validation to our country and the economic reforms,” he said.
He added that raising Nigeria’s flag at the WCO headquarters for the first time marks “a significant milestone.”
The president credited Adeniyi’s leadership over the past two years for this achievement. He praised the Customs boss for strengthening institutional efficiency, deepening reforms, and surpassing revenue expectations.
A Record of Reform and Modernisation
Since becoming Comptroller-General, Adeniyi has transformed the NCS. He led major modernisation efforts, automated customs procedures, and tightened revenue collection.
Under his guidance, the agency consistently surpassed its revenue targets and improved relationships with key stakeholders.
Tinubu commended the WCO Council for unanimously electing Adeniyi. He promised Nigeria’s full support for his new international role.
“I urge the new Chairperson of the WCO to live up to the expectations of the Council and even surpass it,” the President added.
Leading Customs on the Global Stage
Adeniyi takes over from Edward Kieswetter, the outgoing chair and head of the South African Revenue Service.
He will officially assume office on July 1, 2025.
The WCO Council is the highest decision-making body in global customs. It shapes international policy and oversees all working groups under the WCO framework.
The organisation promotes cooperation, reform, and shared best practices among customs services across the world.
President Tinubu also thanked the WCO Secretary-General and other global leaders for their confidence in Nigeria’s Customs leadership.
