After over 30 years, the Federal Government has fulfilled its housing promise to the victorious 1994 Super Eagles squad. Former striker Efan Ekoku, a key member of that legendary team, received his housing allocation this week.
The house, located in Abuja, was officially presented through a letter handed over to Ekoku’s niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, during a brief ceremony at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
The Director of Public Building and Housing Development, Pemi Temitope, handed over the letter on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
Temitope described the allocation as a demonstration of government’s appreciation for the 1994 team’s “patriotic service and national sacrifice.” He said the gesture was part of efforts to honour commitments made to those who brought pride to the nation.
The squad had won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia, and the housing pledge was made soon after. However, it took nearly three decades for the promise to be fulfilled.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the implementation of the pledge in 2022.
Niece Grateful for Honour to Uncle Efan Ekoku
Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, who received the document on behalf of Ekoku, thanked the government and housing ministry.
“I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this long-standing pledge to my uncle,” she said.

“It is truly heartening to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through. This gesture not only honours Mr. Efan Ekoku’s service but also restores faith in the value of public promises being kept.”
While some players received their houses in other states, Ekoku was among those granted units in the Federal Capital Territory.
The 1994 Super Eagles team is regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest squads. They not only won the AFCON that year but also qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time.
Players from that era, including Efan Ekoku, Jay-Jay Okocha, and Rashidi Yekini, brought global recognition to Nigerian football.
The housing allocations represent a long-overdue reward for their achievements.
