Masquerade Attack: Police Arrest 3 in Nsukka, Enugu State

Police in Enugu State have arrested three members of the Oriokpa masquerade group after a violent attack on residents during a cultural festival in Nsukka.

The incident happened on June 22 and was filmed by witnesses. The video, now viral, shows victims being beaten by the masqueraders. One person was seriously injured and taken to the hospital.

According to the police, the arrests took place on June 23 around 3:30 p.m. after help from local residents led to their capture.

Police spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed that the attackers initially ran away when police officers arrived but were later tracked down and identified.

Police Vow to Arrest Remaining Suspects

SP Ndukwe said others involved in the attack are still on the run. Police are now working to bring all those responsible to justice.

“The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, has ordered a full-scale investigation to ensure everyone involved is arrested,” Ndukwe said.

Commissioner Giwa responded strongly to the attacks. He said police respect cultural traditions but will not accept violence under the cover of cultural activities.

“Masquerade displays have cultural meaning, but using them to commit crimes will not be tolerated,” the Commissioner warned.

He urged other suspects to turn themselves in before police catch them.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Probe

Local residents were shocked by the level of violence displayed during what should have been a peaceful festival.

Some of them helped police to identify the attackers. The victims, according to reports, were not involved in any trouble before being attacked.

The police have promised that justice will be done.

“We assure the public that those behind these attacks will face the full weight of the law,” the police statement added.

The investigation continues, and police have called on witnesses and community members to share any useful information.

Enugu State has seen occasional clashes during masquerade parades in the past, but police say this recent violence stands out due to the serious injuries recorded.

Security has now been beefed up in the area to prevent further attacks or retaliation.
