Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has inaugurated the new Management Board for the Protection of State-owned Social Homes. The initiative enhances care and welfare services for the state’s most vulnerable residents.
The newly formed board will be chaired by the First Lady of the state, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah. She will work alongside Reverend Father Prof. Christian Anieke, who serves as co-chairman.
Reverend Canon Chibuike Okolo has been named the vice-chairman, and the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, will represent the Ministry on the board.
Other members include Rev. Sister Mary Gloria Iloka, Rev. Sister Veritas Onyemelukwe, Pastor Elias Anyigbo, Mrs. Anna Igbokwe, and Barrister Chidinma Egeonu. Barrister Uzoama Okeji has been appointed as the Executive Secretary of the board.
During the inauguration at Government House in Enugu, Governor Mbah reiterated his administration’s resolve to provide inclusive development that leaves no group behind.
“Recall that even when we expressed a huge growth projection, we immediately added that we were going to also eradicate poverty,” Mbah said. “We know that as a people, we are only as good as our weakest link.”
He stressed that his administration will prioritize the well-being of vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, living in state-owned social homes.
“We are committed to making sure that we provide you with all the tools and funds you require to ensure that our people in these social homes live in comfort and dignity,” the governor added.
Board Members Urged to Act Transparently
Speaking at the ceremony, the First Lady urged board members to work with fairness and diligence. She asked them to serve with a sense of duty and care for the people entrusted to their supervision.
“I urge you all to be diligent, fair and transparent in discharging your duties. Discharge those duties in compliance with the law and take good care of our children,” Mrs. Mbah stated.
The new board is expected to begin work immediately, coordinating reforms in the state’s welfare institutions, and ensuring proper care, oversight, and service delivery.
Governor Grants Clemency to 11 Inmates
In a separate development, Governor Mbah has granted clemency to eleven inmates serving time in correctional centres across Enugu State. The move is part of efforts to decongest prisons and reintegrate reformed individuals back into society.
The names of those granted freedom include Ugochukwu Oma, Onah Nnamdi, Chiadikobi Onu, Emmanuel Sambo, Emeka Nyia, and Ngene Oluebube. Others are Francis Chinecherem, Eze Chigozie, Anthony Tombari, Francis Chibuzor, and Uzoma Nnaoche.
The clemency was granted in line with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution and followed recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy. The council is led by the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, and includes representatives from the Nigerian Correctional Service, CAPIO, and CIDJAP.
The decision was based on confirmed behavioural reform, evidence of acquired vocational skills, and readiness to reintegrate into society. These factors were outlined in reports submitted by the relevant agencies.
Governor Mbah’s administration said the act of mercy aligns with its broader goal of offering second chances to individuals who have demonstrated genuine change.
