Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has launched a fiery tirade against Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, accusing him of politicising national tragedies and spreading misinformation.
Omokri, who has since realigned his loyalty from Atiku Abubakar to President Bola Tinubu soon after the 2023 election, did not hold back in a lengthy social media post that called Obi’s recent actions “witchcraft.”
Omokri’s comments follow Obi’s public reactions to the recent massacre in Yelewata, Benue State, and the ₦210 trillion claim concerning the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC). He alleged that Obi has shown no sense of responsibility in his criticisms and accused him of exploiting national grief for political gain.
He said, “Peter Obi should stop confusing witchcraft with opposition politics. Waiting for disasters and then gleefully politicising them is not leadership. That, Mr. Peter Obi, is witchcraft. You have joined a coven of witches and are now their bloodsucking mouthpiece.”
Omokri also drew a comparison between Nigeria’s political class and that of India. Referring to the Pahalgam massacre in Kashmir where 26 civilians were killed, he said opposition parties in India united with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to condemn terrorism.
He argued that Obi did the opposite by attacking the federal and state governments shortly after the killings in Yelewata.
“Instead of joining efforts to combat terrorism, Obi chose to criticise the President’s clothes and the town hall meeting,” Omokri added. “He did not suggest one solution. Meanwhile, Tinubu has proposed state police and more troop deployment.”
Disputes Over ₦210 Trillion and NNPC’s Audit
On the ongoing controversy surrounding the audit of the NNPC, Omokri dismissed Peter Obi’s claims that ₦210 trillion was missing. He pointed out that the Senate never said the money was unaccounted for but only raised questions requiring clarification.
According to him, the NNPC had already provided explanations, stating the funds were legitimate cash call payments made to joint venture partners between 2017 and 2023.
Omokri accused Obi of relying on social media rumours rather than facts.
“Peter Obi never read the report. He just heard ₦210 trillion and ran with it,” he said. “If he had a First-Class Accountancy degree like President Tinubu instead of a Second-Class Philosophy degree, he would not have made such a rookie mistake.”
Implications for Political Credibility and Responsibility
Omokri closed his post by ridiculing Obi’s leadership style and alleged ignorance, making a dig at Obi, who once, in a viral video, suggested he got an advise from a “madman.”
He said Obi was only good at criticising others but could not offer viable alternatives.
“Criticism is like running down a hill. So easy that anyone can do it. However, providing solutions is an uphill task, which is why Obi avoids it,” he declared.
Omokri, who touts himself as Obi’s nemesis, often attempts to repudiate his criticisms of the government. But for a self-acclaimed gospel preacher who dwells mostly in the arena of politics, and now defends a president he once described as “a drug runner and certificate forger”, not many Obi’s supporters – the Obidients, still pay attention to him as they once did.
