The Kremlin has issued a strong warning about the worsening situation in the Middle East, describing the region as sinking into “an abyss of instability and war.”
Russia said it is deeply concerned about the escalating military confrontation, especially between Israel and Iran, and has offered to help mediate a peaceful solution.
Speaking in Moscow on Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is watching the situation closely and warned that the current violence could quickly spread across borders.
He stressed that the conflict carries serious risks for surrounding areas, including those near Russia’s southern regions.
Peskov told reporters, “This war is fraught with geographic expansion and unpredictable consequences. This region is at our borders. It’s potentially dangerous for us and we are concerned.”
Although Russia does not share a direct border with any Middle Eastern country, it is connected to the region through its southern territories and nearby countries like Iran and Turkey.
Russia Maintains Dialogue With Key Players
Russia has called on the United States to avoid any direct military strikes against Iran and to seek diplomatic pathways instead. Moscow, which has strong ties to both Tehran and Tel Aviv, said it remains in contact with all sides.
Peskov stated that Russia still maintains communication with Israel, Iran, and the U.S. He added that it is difficult to say whether President Vladimir Putin’s offer to mediate will be accepted, but confirmed that Russia prefers immediate talks and a ceasefire.
“We favour an end to hostilities and a move to diplomacy as soon as possible,” Peskov said.
Concerns Over Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Facility
The situation became even more tense after reports on Thursday suggested that Israel had bombed Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, a site built and maintained with Russian assistance. However, the Israeli military later clarified that the claim was incorrect and had been made in error.
Still, Russian officials reacted strongly to the report. Alexei Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear energy firm Rosatom, warned that any attack on the Bushehr facility could lead to a nuclear disaster similar to Chernobyl.
Speaking from St. Petersburg on Friday, Likhachev said, “We…very much hope that all our signals from yesterday reached the Israeli leadership.” He confirmed that Russia has over 300 specialists working at the site, along with about 200 family members.
He added that the situation at Bushehr remains “normal” and that all safety measures are currently intact.
Russia has built its diplomatic posture in the region on maintaining close ties with opposing sides. It has supported Iran in areas such as energy and defense, while also keeping lines of trade and military coordination open with Israel.
With tensions rising and the risk of full-scale war increasing, Moscow’s balancing role could prove vital.
