Nigeria Maritime University Appoints Flora Oluwafemi as New Vice Chancellor

The Nigeria Maritime University in Okerenkoko, Delta State, has appointed Professor Flora Tobolayefa Oluwafemi as its new Vice Chancellor.

Her appointment was announced by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr Abdullahi Bardi, who praised the thorough and transparent process that led to her selection.

Prof. Oluwafemi emerged as the successful candidate after a competitive selection process that lasted three months. The process involved a public call for applications, detailed evaluations by a panel of experts, and transparent interviews with shortlisted candidates.

She previously served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) at Nigeria Maritime University and was formerly the Head of Department at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

With these credentials, she is considered well-equipped to lead the institution into a new phase of academic and administrative development.

Mr Bardi expressed full confidence in her leadership, describing her as someone capable of steering the university toward playing a stronger role in Nigeria’s blue economy.

He said the new Vice Chancellor would help position the university as a key contributor to maritime innovation and national development.

The blue economy, which includes marine transportation, fisheries, offshore oil and gas, shipbuilding, and other ocean-related sectors, is a growing focus in Nigeria’s long-term economic strategy.

The Nigeria Maritime University was established to develop manpower and research capabilities in support of this sector.

Bardi also used the opportunity to thank the Presidency, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), and the National Assembly for their continued support.

He noted that the combined efforts of these institutions had played an important role in the university’s progress and expansion since its establishment.

Oluwafemi is expected to assume office immediately and lead efforts to strengthen the university’s academic standards, infrastructure, and maritime research output.

Her appointment came at a significant moment for the university, which wants to be a West African sub-regional leader in maritime education and training.
