The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that their current suffering will not last much longer. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this known during a television interview on Wednesday.
He said that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is steadily implementing reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy and improving citizens’ lives.
According to the minister, over 900,000 Nigerians have so far benefited from the Presidential loan and grant programme. In addition, more than 300,000 students have accessed the newly introduced student loan scheme.
He said the administration has also cleared over ₦10 billion in foreign exchange debt backlog, which had been hindering economic activity and frustrating international trade.
Despite these measures, public complaints about hunger, hardship, and a rising cost of living continue. Inflation remains high, and several Nigerians say they are yet to feel any positive impact from government policies.
Recent data has also shown that Nigeria’s overall debt burden has increased in recent months, raising concern among economic watchers.
“The Pain Is Beginning to Subside” — Minister
When asked when the reforms will start positively affecting the lives of everyday Nigerians, Idris responded with cautious optimism. “The pain will end soon. Already, it’s beginning to subside a bit,” he said. He acknowledged that food prices are still high but claimed there has been some progress when compared to last year.
“We are not saying that we are there yet, but we are saying there is a steady progression towards the destination, the prosperity that Mr President has promised Nigerians,” Idris explained.
The Minister added that such transformation does not happen overnight but pointed to international economic rating agencies that, according to him, now view Nigeria’s future economic outlook more positively.
“I’m not going to sit here to say that our problems are over,” he said. “But what I can say is that there is a gradual journey towards the prosperity that Mr President has promised.”
He also defended the administration’s pace, saying the President had never claimed that Nigeria’s problems were solved. Instead, he insisted the government is laying the foundation for long-term economic reform, even though it is currently painful for many citizens.
