Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (retired), the former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has officially declared his intention to contest in the 2027 presidential election. He will run under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Al-Mustapha made this announcement during a meeting with the party’s executive committee and supporters in Minna, Niger State. He said his decision to join the race comes from his concern over the country’s worsening condition and the need for experienced leadership to steer Nigeria back to growth and stability.
“I am pained and deeply concerned about the current state of the nation. However, with the right direction and commitment, Nigeria can rise again. Though the road ahead may be rough, together we can rebuild the Nigeria we all deserve,” he said.
Plans to Build National Support for Presidential Bid
The meeting in Minna was part of Al-Mustapha’s broader plan to build momentum ahead of the 2027 elections. According to his campaign team, the retired military officer will engage key political and community stakeholders across the country in the coming months.
The campaign’s Director of News Media and ICT said Al-Mustapha is “fully prepared for the journey ahead, ready to serve with integrity, courage, and a clear plan for progress.”
While in Niger State, Al-Mustapha also travelled to Mokwa to sympathise with residents affected by a recent flood that displaced over 200 people and destroyed property worth millions of naira. He described the incident as another reminder of the pressing need for visionary leadership and efficient disaster management systems across the country.
He said Nigeria faces multiple challenges that require urgent attention. These include insecurity, poverty, youth unemployment, and poor infrastructure. According to him, only committed leadership, national unity, and practical solutions will address the country’s problems.
SDP Endorses Al-Mustapha’s Candidacy
The state chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima, welcomed Al-Mustapha’s declaration. He described the former military officer as a committed and disciplined Nigerian who has shown a deep understanding of governance and national service.
“We are confident that with credible candidates and a clear vision, the SDP will be a force to reckon with in 2027,” Yarima said.
Al-Mustapha’s presidential bid adds him to a growing list of political figures positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
