The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has released a shortlist of 72 candidates for the prestigious title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for 2025. The list comprises 57 legal practitioners and 15 academic professionals.
This announcement was made public through a notice signed by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, on Tuesday.
According to the LPPC, the shortlisted candidates have met the committee’s selection criteria. However, this shortlist does not automatically guarantee their elevation to the SAN rank. Each applicant must still undergo final evaluations, including interviews and integrity checks.
To ensure transparency and fairness, the LPPC has invited the public to submit any complaints or remarks about the character, conduct, and reputation of the shortlisted individuals. All submissions must be in twenty copies, verified under oath before a superior court in Nigeria or a Notary Public.
“Every complaint must be accompanied with a verifying affidavit deposed to by the author before a superior court of record in Nigeria or before a Notary Public and must be in twenty (20) copies,” the public notice stated.
Awarding the SAN Title: A Mark of Legal Excellence
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria title is one of the highest honors in the legal profession. It is awarded to legal practitioners and academics who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and integrity in the legal field. Candidates go through rigorous scrutiny, and only those who meet the standards in both advocacy and academics make it to the final stage.
Those who eventually receive the SAN title will join a select group of elite legal professionals who are granted special privileges in Nigerian courts, including the right to wear silk robes, sit in front rows in courtrooms, and enjoy higher professional respect.
The final list of successful applicants will be announced after the LPPC concludes its evaluations and interview sessions.
Governor’s Note and Additional Information
Although this round is part of the 2025 selection process, it continues the LPPC’s long-standing tradition of selecting only the most distinguished individuals for the rank. Many of those shortlisted have contributed to landmark legal cases, taught at top institutions, or published important research in legal scholarship.
Among the academic candidates are respected professors from various Nigerian universities who have published legal textbooks, supervised PhD students, and provided advisory services in national policy and international law.
Legal practitioners on the list include experienced litigators, human rights defenders, and commercial law experts who have been active in Nigerian and regional courts for many years.
Members of the public, legal institutions, and professional groups are expected to submit all comments before the LPPC proceeds with the final screening and makes a decision.
