Wike Declares Opposition Coalition “Dead on Arrival” as Tinubu Inaugurates Abuja Project

In a sharp critique of opposition efforts, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, declared that the coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 reelection bid was doomed from the start.

Speaking at the inauguration of the left-hand service lane of the Apo-Wasa Road, Wike dismissed the alliance as lacking unity, vision, and political will.

“A coalition that was born and died the same day,” he said, questioning whether opposition figures could even agree on their direction.

Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu commended Wike’s efforts in the capital city.

“Remain focused on the country to deliver,” Tinubu advised. He said future generations would remember Wike not for responding to critics but for his visible achievements.

Wike, in turn, challenged opposition leaders to acknowledge Tinubu’s ongoing projects.

“May you never be happy in your life because you choose not to be happy,” he said, adding that Abuja residents should focus on results rather than political rhetoric.

₦39 Billion Conference Centre Controversy

The minister also defended the ₦39 billion renovation of the International Conference Centre, recently renamed after President Tinubu.

Critics, including the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, condemned the cost, calling it inflated and unnecessary.

Wike dismissed these concerns, arguing Nigeria must reflect its status as Africa’s giant.

“Look at the exchange rate in 1991 and 2025, and then compare,” he stated, insisting the upgrade was worth the investment.

Tinubu praised Wike for reviving abandoned projects and delivering visible change with discipline and speed.

“Even the blind walking through this Wasa Road will know Nigeria is indeed working,” he said.

The newly inaugurated Apo-Wasa Road, a 15-kilometre stretch, is expected to improve connectivity between the city centre and key areas such as Wasa, Apo, and Lokogoma.
