Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has reacted to President Bola Tinubu’s comments about the ongoing struggles within opposition parties. Speaking at the National Assembly during Democracy Day celebrations, Tinubu remarked that he was pleased to see opposition groups in disarray.
During his speech, Tinubu said, “For me, I will not say, try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you to do so, either.” He also dismissed claims that his administration was working toward a one-party state, despite the defection of several opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Saraki Acknowledges PDP’s Internal Challenges
Responding to Tinubu’s remarks, Saraki admitted that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is facing difficulties. Speaking to journalists after attending the Democracy Day ceremony, he urged PDP members and other opposition figures to focus on rebuilding their political structures.
Saraki said, “I think we must take him at his words. I mean, he spoke well, saying that he’s not for a one-party state. So we must take him at his word, and he supports a multi-party. So we are all on the same page.”
He explained that efforts were underway to unify opposition members and strengthen their position.
“That’s why we are going around and bringing everybody to come around. So those who say they are under pressure, there is no pressure anymore. So, we’re all for multi-party, and everybody should get their house in order, as he said, he’s not going to help us, so we are going to sort our own house again.”
Opposition Faces Pressure Amid Political Shifts
Saraki’s comments come at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is shifting, with several opposition figures defecting to the APC.
While Tinubu has denied any intention of creating a one-party system, critics argue that the ruling party’s growing influence could weaken democratic competition.
As opposition parties work to resolve internal conflicts, the coming months will determine whether they can regain stability and present a united front to meaningfully challenge the formidable candidacy of an incumbent and maverick politician, President Tinubu.
