Khaby Lame, the most followed person on TikTok, has left the United States after a brief detainment by immigration officials in Las Vegas.
The 25-year-old Senegalese-Italian star was held at Harry Reid International Airport on Friday after allegedly staying in the country longer than his visa allowed.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Lame was not deported. Instead, he left the country on his own after being granted what is called a voluntary departure.
This type of exit helps avoid having a deportation order on record, which could otherwise bar a person from returning to the United States for as long as ten years.
Khaby Lame arrived in the United States on April 30. ICE officials said he “overstayed the terms of his visa.” He has not issued a public statement about the incident. Efforts to reach him through the contact email listed on his Instagram account have so far gone unanswered.
His detainment comes during a time of increased immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump. Authorities have recently conducted raids in cities like Los Angeles, causing public demonstrations. These actions have tested the limits of the presidentโs immigration powers.
Lameโs sudden departure comes just weeks after he appeared at the Met Gala in New York City. He had attended the high-profile fashion event shortly after landing in the U.S., sharing the red carpet with Hollywood celebrities and global icons.
Born in Senegal and raised in Italy, Lame moved to Europe with his working-class parents when he was an infant. He started his career during the COVID-19 lockdown by posting silent reaction videos on TikTok. In his clips, he responds to bizarre and overly complicated life hacks, using facial expressions instead of words.
Lame now has over 162 million followers on TikTok, making him the platformโs most-followed content creator. His meteoric rise has attracted the attention of major fashion and nonprofit organizations. In 2022, he signed a long-term partnership deal with Hugo Boss, and in January, he was named a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
Despite his legal troubles in the U.S., Khaby Lame continues to be a beloved figure online. Fans hope the visa issue will be resolved so he can return to the U.S. in the future.
