Protests over immigration raids that began in Los Angeles last Friday have now spread across the country. ICE agents conducted several enforcement operations in and around LA, sparking public outrage and demonstrations.
In response to growing unrest, President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops and Marines to California—without a formal request from Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom later urged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to cancel the order.
Protesters are now organizing nationwide. Activists have planned “No Kings” rallies this Saturday to coincide with President Trump’s planned military parade in Washington.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that ICE will continue raids. “ICE will continue to enforce the law,” she said on social media.
Protests Turn Tense in Texas
In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott announced that the National Guard would be deployed across the state to “ensure peace & order.” He warned that violent acts during protests would lead to arrests.
In Austin, demonstrations moved from the State Capitol to a federal ICE office. Four police officers were injured when rocks and bottles were thrown. Officers responded with tear gas and arrested 12 people.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated, “We support peaceful protest… [but] arrests will be made” if violence occurs. One protester said, “We have to stand our ground and go beyond just words.”
In Dallas, police declared a Monday night protest unlawful after similar confrontations. At least one arrest was made after objects were thrown.
Other Cities Join In
In Denver, protesters marched from the State Capitol through downtown. Police blocked entrance to Interstate 25. A video showed smoke and objects thrown near Coors Field. One arrest was confirmed.
Philadelphia saw over 150 protesters gather at the Federal Detention Center on Tuesday. After ignoring dispersal orders, 15 people were arrested. Two police officers and two protesters suffered minor injuries.
In Seattle, about 50 people demonstrated outside an immigration court. They blocked entrances with scooters, preventing legal representatives from entering. Student organizer Mathieu Chabaud said the group was acting in solidarity with LA protesters.
Near LA, in Santa Ana, armored vehicles blocked streets. Workers cleaned graffiti and broken glass near the Civic Center. National Guard troops remained posted near federal buildings.
Widespread Solidarity Demonstrations
In Boston, hundreds gathered Monday to support union leader David Huerta, detained in the LA raids. Protesters held signs like “Protect our immigrant neighbors” and “Massachusetts stands with L.A.”
Chrissy Lynch of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO said, “An immigrant doesn’t stand between an American worker and a good job, a billionaire does.”
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu defended the protests, saying “Secret police do not make communities safer.”
Washington, D.C. saw union-led marches past the Justice Department. Rep. Pramila Jayapal condemned mass ICE raids and the use of tear gas on peaceful protesters.
San Francisco’s Mission District hosted peaceful rallies after a violent Sunday night led to over 150 arrests. Mayor Daniel Lurie said the city will protect protest rights but “never tolerate destruction.”
In New York, thousands protested in Manhattan. Outside Trump Tower, 24 were arrested in a sit-in. Protesters demanded an end to the raids and military presence in LA.
Chicago’s Federal Plaza also saw thousands rally. Bilingual signs read “ICE out of Chicago.” Police made several arrests and temporarily halted bus service after a car drove into the crowd—no injuries were reported.
