Senator Orji Uzor Kalu drew attention in the Senate chamber today when he arrived wearing an African print with the words “President Tinubu for 2027”.
The former Abia State governor and current senator for Abia North openly supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his re-election in 2027.
Kalu told reporters at the National Assembly that Nigerians are complaining about the economy because they are used to quick and easy money.
While speaking with journalists on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, Kalu admitted that many Nigerians are suffering due to Tinubu’s economic policies. However, he said the hardship is temporary and part of a bigger plan.
“Let me be honest with you. I’m a businessman, not a politician. There are only a few things that are not happening,” he said.
Kalu explained that the government’s policies are already showing results at the macroeconomic level. He believes it will take another two to three years before ordinary citizens begin to feel the benefits.
“People are still suffering — yes, I agree with that. But it has started trickling in at the macro level — that is, at the upper level, not the lower level. So I’m hoping that in the next 2–3 years, the President’s policies will trickle down, and Nigerians will appreciate what he’s doing,” he added.
“Nigerians Are Used to Easy Money” — Kalu
Kalu praised President Tinubu for removing the fuel subsidy and unifying the exchange rates. He said these were bold moves that no other Nigerian leader had dared to make.
“Since 1960, this is the first President — and I have the facts — who stopped the fuel subsidy. This is the first President who merged the dollar rates,” he said.
According to him, this is the reason Nigerians are complaining. He said people had gotten used to making money without effort.
“Nigerians are not used to working hard. We’re used to getting easy money. People used to sit in their houses, use their phones, get dollars, and sell at very high rates,” Kalu said.
He added, “People sit at home, use their tank farms, collect papers, and make money. This is one President who has said: if you are ready to make money, do it the right way. If you’re not ready, then leave it.”
“Stop Cursing Nigeria Abroad” — Senator Warns Critics
Senator Kalu also addressed Nigerians who criticise their country or president abroad. He called on all citizens, whether in the opposition or ruling party, to respect their country.
“We don’t want this country to break. We want the country to continue being our country. I am a product of this country and I am very proud that I am a Nigerian,” he said.
Kalu condemned the habit of insulting Nigeria while overseas. “You can see people cursing Nigeria abroad, talking about Nigeria abroad, saying bad things about their own country. It is not good,” he stated.
He reminded citizens that no leader stays in power forever. “Tinubu is not the owner of the country. Highest he will stay is eight years and after eight years we will take back our country. Buhari is in Daura now. One day, Tinubu will go back to Lagos in 2031,” he said.
Kalu urged everyone to pray for the president’s health. “What Nigerians should pray is for the President to be in good health and have long life to finish his tenure,” he concluded.
