President Bola Tinubu has appointed Philip Shaibu, the immediate-past Deputy Governor of Edo State, as the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS). His appointment is expected to bring reforms to the institute.
The National Institute for Sports (NIS) was established in 1974 as a research and training center under the National Sports Commission (NSC). It is responsible for producing top-rated coaches, sports managers, and sports scientists.
The institute also conducts sports research and works to improve Nigeria’s performance in international sporting competitions. Shaibu’s appointment is seen as a move to reposition the institute for better efficiency.
Meanwhile, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a ₦50 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Shaibu against ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki and four others.
Shaibu’s legal team applied to withdraw the case, citing an amicable settlement among the parties. His counsel, Anita Oteh, informed the court that the dispute had been resolved.
However, Aliyu Abdulkadir, representing the Attorney General of the Federation, expressed surprise at the settlement claim, stating that his client had not been informed. While he did not object to the withdrawal, he requested an outright dismissal.
Oteh opposed the dismissal request, urging the court to allow a simple withdrawal. Justice Lifu ruled that since pleadings had already been joined, dismissal was the appropriate legal order.
