The Nigerian Navy has held a graduation lecture for cadets of the Direct Short Service Course (DSSC) 29 and Special Duty Pre-Commissioning Training (SDPCT) 24 at the Nigerian Naval College, Onne, Rivers State.
A total of 264 cadets completed their training — 115 from DSSC 29 and 149 from SDPCT 24. The graduation lecture is part of events ahead of their Passing Out Parade.
Rear Admiral Monday Unurhiere, Chief of Naval Transformation, delivered the lecture titled “Mentoring Future Leaders in the Nigerian Navy: Cultivating a Culture of Guidance and Support.”
He urged cadets to see mentorship as a key to strong leadership.
“Mentors teach, provide learning opportunities, and are never threatened by the success of their mentees,” he said.
Unurhiere explained that good leaders are humble and open to learning from others. He advised cadets to avoid bureaucracy and embrace feedback, even from junior officers.
The naval boss described mentorship as a relationship built on trust and guidance. He also said mentorship programmes are declining due to poor leadership and systems.
He told the cadets to seek mentors, stay open to corrections, build trust, and always be reliable.
After the lecture, cadets took part in an interactive session. They asked questions and received direct guidance from Rear Admiral Unurhiere.
Senior Naval Officers Offer More Advice
Rear Admiral Istifanus Albara, the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command, also addressed the cadets. He told them to lead with honesty, treat others with dignity, and maintain discipline.
Rear Admiral Haruna Zego, Commandant of the Nigerian Naval College, praised the cadets. He said their journey was not easy but they stayed focused. He reminded them to defend the Navy’s values wherever they serve.
The cadets expressed joy and pride after completing their training. Jummai Bitrus said, “I am happy to have completed the course. I will lead by example.” Benedict Udofia said, “I pledge to be a good mentor.”
The event was attended by senior officers, instructors, and special guests.
