Trump Slam 50% Tariff on EU Amid Trade Disputes, EU Readies Retaliation

United States President Donald Trump has announced a steep 50% tariff on goods imported from the European Union. The new tariff will begin on June 1, 2025.

Trump made this known in a post on Truth Social on Friday. He expressed anger over what he described as failed trade talks with the EU.

“I am recommending a straight 50% tariff on the European Union, starting on June 1, 2025,” he wrote.

The announcement follows several months of unresolved trade negotiations between Washington and Brussels. According to Trump, the EU has shown no willingness to compromise.

“The EU had been formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE,” he said. He also described the talks as “difficult.”

Following the post, U.S. stock futures dropped. Investors reacted with concern, fearing the start of a fresh trade war. Analysts say the hike could disrupt supply chains and reduce investor confidence.

The current tariff on EU imports is 10%. Trump’s new plan would increase that by 40 percentage points, sending a strong message to the EU.

Retaliation from the EU Expected

This is not Trump’s first trade move since returning to the White House. In recent weeks, he announced new penalties on foreign-made steel, aluminum, and cars. Most countries were given 90 days to renegotiate their trade terms. But talks with the EU have not improved.

The European Union is preparing its own response. Reports say Brussels has lined up nearly €100 billion worth of duties on American products, equal to around $113 billion.

EU leaders insist they won’t accept more barriers to their exports. They want existing tariffs removed. But Trump appears uninterested in their demands.

The situation has created new tensions between two of the world’s largest economies. Many global observers fear this move could lead to another period of economic conflict and uncertainty.
