Tragedy struck in the Magama Jibia area of Katsina State after four members of the same family died from suspected food poisoning.
The victims included three children—Ahmed Ayuba, Nana Ayuba, and Hussaina Ayuba. All were rushed to the Jibia General Hospital. Doctors confirmed their deaths shortly after arrival.
A fourth child, 12-year-old Hafsat Ayuba, is still alive and receiving treatment. Hospital staff say she is responding well to medication and care.
The family had reportedly eaten a plate of spaghetti shortly before falling ill.
Suspected Food Poisoning Raises Questions of Intent
Authorities believe the food may have been intentionally poisoned. Police have arrested a 20-year-old woman named Fatima Abdulkadir. She allegedly cooked the meal that caused the deaths.
Two other individuals have also been arrested. Their names have not been released yet. Police say investigations are ongoing.
“Fatima Abdulkadir, who prepared the spaghetti noodles allegedly consumed by the victims, along with two others, has been arrested in connection with the incident,” said a police source.
The incident has left the Magama Jibia community in shock. Many residents described the children as lively and kind.
Police and health officials have visited the house to collect samples and further evidence. Forensic experts are expected to test the remaining food.
Local authorities have promised to uncover the truth behind the tragic incident.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased have been buried according to Islamic customs. Neighbours and sympathizers gathered in large numbers to console the family.
