President Tinubu Sends ₦1.48 Trillion Rivers 2025 Budget to Senate for Approval

President Bola Tinubu has sent a revised 2025 budget proposal of ₦1.48 trillion for Rivers State to the Nigerian Senate. This follows the Supreme Court’s ruling which cancelled the previous budget passed under the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Tinubu’s message during plenary. Tinubu’s move was in response to the legal and political crisis in Rivers State, which led to an emergency rule.

Rivers State has been under a Sole Administrator since March. This came after a Presidential proclamation removed Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the entire House of Assembly. The Federal Government said this action was to stop “a near breakdown of government.”

Budget Targets Infrastructure, Health, Education, and Jobs

A major part of the proposed ₦1.48 trillion budget, ₦324 billion, is set aside for infrastructure. This includes both ongoing and new road, bridge, and urban renewal projects.

The health sector is to receive ₦166 billion. From this, ₦5 billion will be used to provide free malaria drugs in public hospitals.

The education sector will get ₦75.6 billion. This is expected to fund schools, teacher recruitment, and educational materials across the state.

In agriculture, ₦31.4 billion is planned. The government aims to create about 6,000 jobs by investing in crop farming, fisheries, and poultry programs.

Senate Sends Budget to Committee for Review

Without a State Assembly in place, Tinubu acted according to constitutional guidelines. The Senate has now referred the proposal to its Adhoc Committee on Emergency Rule in Rivers State.

The committee will study the budget and make recommendations before final approval is granted.
