The Kano State Censorship Board has suspended 22 Hausa-language film series. This move comes after producers released the series without first submitting it for approval.
Executive Secretary Abba El-Mustapha issued the suspension following an internal board meeting. He said the films breached regulations that require prior censorship.
List of Affected Films and the Board’s Directive
Information Officer Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman listed the suspended titles. They include Dakin Amarya, Mashahuri, Gidan Sarauta, Wasiyya, Tawakkaltu, Mijina, Wani Zamani, Labarina, Mallaka, and Kudin Ruwa.
Others are Boka Ko Malam, Wayasan Gobe, Rana Dubu, Manyan Mata, Fatake, Garwashi, Jamilun Jiddan, Shahadar Nabila, Dadin Kowa, Tabarmar Kishiyata, and Rigar Aro.
The Board said it will take legal action against anyone who fails to follow the rules. “Non-compliance could result in legal consequences,” it warned.
Producers must stop all broadcasts or streaming immediately. They must also submit their work for approval between Monday, May 19, and Monday, May 26, 2025. The Board clarified that the earlier date listed as May 15 was an error.
Stakeholders Asked to Enforce Censorship Rules
The Board urged television stations and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to help enforce censorship laws. It also asked industry players to cooperate with the government to protect cultural values.
“We are calling on all stakeholders to follow the law. This will help build a better and more professional Kannywood industry,” the Board said.
The Board believes proper censorship helps promote creativity and protect viewers from harmful content. It said it will continue working with filmmakers to ensure compliance while supporting the industry’s development.
