In a baffling superhuman performance, chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen played against a massive online team of 143,000 players, and the match ended in a draw.

The match, called “Magnus Carlsen vs. The World”, was hosted on chess.com. Carlsen played from Norway, while his opponents came from around the world.

Each side had 24 hours to decide their next move. The match began on April 4 and lasted for over six weeks.

Magnus Carlsen, who was world champion from 2013 to 2023, believed he had a small edge at the start of the game.

“I felt that I was a little bit better, early in the opening,” Carlsen said in a post-match video. “Honestly, since then, they haven’t given me a single chance.”

This statement shows how well the global team performed. Despite being amateurs, their group strategy held up against one of the greatest chess players ever.

Millions Watched and Voted During the Global Game

The online opponents chose each move by voting. Players from different time zones and countries logged in daily to cast their votes.

The global nature of the match brought excitement to fans. It also showed how technology connects players and makes chess more interactive.

Some fans joined for fun. Others took the challenge seriously and worked together using online discussion forums to suggest and evaluate moves.

In the end, the final position was balanced. Neither side had a clear way to win.

Other Chess Legends Have Played the World Too

Magnus Carlsen is not the first grandmaster to take on a huge crowd. In 1999, Russian legend Garry Kasparov played against over 50,000 people. The game was historic and drew wide attention at the time.

Last year, Indian chess champion Viswanathan Anand faced more than 70,000 online players in a similar event. These matches are part of efforts to grow the global chess community and make the game more engaging for everyone.

Carlsen’s match with 143,000 players has now set a new standard. It’s a record number of opponents for a single chess game.
